Both fabrics start as a woody plant and end as a silky sheet. What separates them is the solvent used in between — and that single choice sets durability, price, and how honest the sustainability claim is.

The definitions

Bamboo viscose is regenerated cellulose made by the viscose process: bamboo pulp is steeped in sodium hydroxide, treated with carbon disulfide, aged, and extruded through a spinneret into an acid bath. It is a chemically aggressive route, and in most mills the solvent is not recovered. US labels must read "rayon from bamboo" or "viscose from bamboo."

TENCEL lyocell is regenerated cellulose made by the lyocell process: wood pulp, usually eucalyptus, beech, or spruce, is dissolved directly in N-methylmorpholine N-oxide, a non-toxic amine oxide solvent recovered and recycled at rates above 99%. TENCEL is Lenzing's trademark; generic lyocell exists and uses the same chemistry with less traceability.

Both are cellulose. Neither is a natural fiber in the sense that cotton or flax is — both are manufactured. The plant is the raw material, not the product.

Processing, and what the claims actually mean

The environmental gap is not about the plant. Bamboo genuinely grows fast without irrigation or pesticides, and eucalyptus plantations are managed farmland. The gap is in the mill. Lyocell's amine oxide loop is the reason TENCEL can publish recovery figures at all; standard viscose emits carbon disulfide, a documented workplace hazard.

Watch for label sleight of hand: "bamboo lyocell" is a real thing — bamboo pulp run through the lyocell process — and it is meaningfully better than bamboo viscose. But "eco bamboo" or "organic bamboo" on a viscose product means nothing about the mill. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 only confirms the finished fabric tests clean for harmful residues; it is not a manufacturing-emissions certificate. Neither fiber can carry GOTS, which requires natural organic fiber.

Feel and temperature

Side by side, bamboo viscose is a hair slicker and drapes with more liquid weight. TENCEL is smooth but slightly drier — closer to a very fine cotton sateen with a soft sheen. In a 300 TC sateen construction at 130–160 GSM, most people cannot reliably tell them apart by touch alone.

Moisture handling is where TENCEL pulls ahead functionally. Lyocell's nanofibril structure absorbs water into the fiber core rather than parking it on the surface, so the fabric touching your skin stays dry-feeling longer. Durability and care

Viscose can lose roughly half its dry strength when saturated. Lyocell retains substantially more, which is the practical reason it survives more wash cycles without stretched seams or wavy hems. Care is identical and non-negotiable for both: cold at 86 °F/30 °C, gentle cycle, mild liquid detergent, no chlorine bleach, no fabric softener (it coats the fiber and kills the wicking you paid for), tumble low or line dry. Full method in how to wash a duvet cover.

The honest drawback for TENCEL is fibrillation: under wet rubbing, microscopic fibrils peel from the fiber surface and read as fine fuzz. Good finishing controls it; cheap generic lyocell often does not.

Verdict

Is TENCEL just expensive bamboo?

No. Both are regenerated cellulose, but the process differs. TENCEL lyocell dissolves wood pulp in a non-toxic amine oxide solvent that is recovered and reused at rates above 99 percent. Which lasts longer when washed weekly?

Can I put TENCEL bedding in the dryer?

Yes, on low heat, and remove it slightly damp. High heat sets permanent creases in lyocell and degrades the fiber over time. Both TENCEL and bamboo should be washed cold at 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius on a gentle cycle without fabric softener.

Does either fiber pill?
