The duvet cover buying guide
Six checks, in the order they matter. Run any listing through them and you'll filter out 90% of future regret before checkout.
1. Fabric & weave
Pick by how you sleep, not by adjectives. Cool and crisp → percale. Smooth and drapey → sateen. Textured, ages beautifully → linen. Sweaty sleeper → bamboo/TENCEL™. Cold room → flannel. Hard budget → microfiber, eyes open. The full matrix lives in the materials hub.
2. Fabric weight (GSM)
Thread count is gamed; grams per square meter isn't. Targets: percale 110–130, sateen 130–150, linen 160–190, flannel 170+. Listings that hide weight while shouting "1000 thread count!" are telling you something — see thread count explained and GSM explained.
3. Closure hardware
Zippers: fastest, most secure; want a coil zipper with a fabric garage at the end. Hidden buttons: classic, repairable; want a reinforced placket and buttons every ~15 cm — wide gaps let the insert peek out. Snaps: fine middle ground. Avoid exposed ties as a primary closure.
4. Corner ties — non-negotiable
Four interior corner ties minimum; eight anchors (corners + sides) on queen and up. No ties, no purchase. If your insert lacks loops, duvet clips retrofit it — details in the shifting fix.
5. Size to your actual insert
Measure the insert, not the mattress. A cover should be 0–2" larger than the insert in each dimension; much bigger and the insert swims, smaller and it compresses flat. Cross-continent buyers (IKEA inserts, EU covers): the size chart has the conversion tables. Unwashed cotton and linen can shrink 3–5% — buy garment-washed or allow for it.
6. Certifications & budget tiers
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (no harmful chemical residues) is the baseline worth requiring; GOTS adds organic fiber and supply-chain standards — both decoded in our certification guide. Realistic budget tiers: under $40 buys honest microfiber or entry cotton; $50–90 buys excellent percale/sateen and blend linen; $100+ buys European flax and heavyweight cotton that outlives the price gap.
