How to wash a duvet cover
A duvet cover exists to be washed — that's its whole job. Done right, weekly laundering makes good fabric softer for years. Done wrong, it shreds button plackets, jams zippers and shrinks a queen into a full.
The four steps
- Empty it and close it. Remove the insert. Turn the cover inside out (protects the face fabric and any print). Zip zippers fully and button every button — open closures snag on agitators and other laundry, and this is how buttons rip off.
- Wash by fabric, not habit. See the table below. When in doubt, cold-gentle is never wrong; hot-normal often is.
- Dry low, remove early. High heat is the shrink and wrinkle machine. Tumble low and pull the cover out slightly damp, or line dry.
- Reassemble properly. Use the burrito method and tie all corner anchors, or you'll be fighting a migrated insert by Thursday.

The mistakes that kill covers
- Washing with the insert in. The mass strains seams and never rinses clean.
- Open zippers in the dryer. The slider hammers the drum and the coil warps. This is the #1 zipper killer.
- Fabric softener on everything. It coats natural fibers (blocking linen's softening) and ruins microfiber's hand.
- Overloading the machine. A king cover needs room to move; a stuffed drum abrades fabric against itself.
- Chlorine bleach on colors or linen. Oxygen bleach is the safe whitener; stain-specific fixes are in the stain guide.
How often?
