GSM explained

GSM is grams per square meter — how much a fabric weighs for a fixed area. Unlike thread count, it cannot be inflated by redefining a term, and unlike marketing adjectives you can verify it at home with a kitchen scale. Five checks.

1. What GSM measures

Cut one square meter of fabric and weigh it in grams. That number is the GSM. A 130 GSM percale means a square meter of it weighs 130 grams. Because the area is fixed by definition, the only way to raise the number is to put more fiber in the cloth — thicker yarns, denser weave, or a brushed nap. There is no equivalent of the multi-ply loophole that made thread count unreliable.

Some listings quote ounces per square yard instead, especially for flannel and quilt fabrics. Multiply oz/yd² by 33.9 to get GSM: a 5 oz flannel is 5 × 33.9 = 170 GSM.

2. Target ranges by fabric

Ranges only compare like to like. A 175 GSM linen is mid-weight and excellent; a 175 GSM percale is heavy and probably unpleasant. Never compare GSM across fiber types, because a gram of flax occupies a different volume than a gram of brushed cotton.

3. Worked example: verify GSM with a kitchen scale

Sellers who omit GSM are usually hiding a light fabric. You can measure it yourself on a cover you already own, or on one that arrived and feels thinner than the photos suggested.

Step one — find the fabric area. A US queen duvet cover measures 90 × 92 inches. That is 8,280 square inches per face. One square meter is 1,550 square inches, so:

8,280 ÷ 1,550 = 5.34 m² per face. A duvet cover is a closed bag with a front and a back, so the total fabric is 5.34 × 2 = 10.68 m².

Step two — weigh the cover. Clean, bone dry, straight off the shelf. A kitchen scale that reads to 1 gram is plenty.

Step three — divide.

Two corrections keep the estimate honest. Buttons, a zipper and corner ties add roughly 20–40 grams, so subtract that before dividing on a precise measurement. Hems, plackets and seam allowances add a few percent of extra fabric that your area figure ignores, which pushes the calculated GSM slightly high. Treat the result as accurate to about ±5%, which is more than enough to separate a 130 from a 92.

For other sizes: a king cover at 104 × 92 inches is 9,568 in² per face, or 6.17 m², so 12.34 m² total. A twin at 68 × 90 is 6,120 in² per face, 3.95 m², so 7.90 m² total.

4. GSM and how a cover sleeps

Heavier fabric traps more air and blocks more airflow, so GSM correlates with warmth within a fiber family. It also drives opacity and drape. A 110 GSM percale is the coolest thing you can put over a duvet and it will let a dark insert ghost through a white cover. A 190 GSM flannel is a genuine winter layer that adds noticeable warmth on its own — the full picture is in flannel duvet covers. Linen behaves differently again: at 170–190 GSM it is heavy by cotton standards yet sleeps cool, because flax conducts heat away and the open weave keeps moving air. Weave changes the story as much as weight. At identical GSM, percale breathes more than sateen because the plain weave leaves more interstitial space — the comparison is drawn out in percale vs. sateen.

5. What GSM does not tell you

Weight is not quality. A 150 GSM cotton made from short-staple fiber pills faster than a 120 GSM combed long-staple percale. Polyester weighs less than cotton per unit volume, so a heavy microfiber and a light cotton can land on the same number and behave nothing alike. GSM also cannot detect chemical finishes, softeners that wash out, or a fiber content claim that is simply false. Use it as a floor test — a fabric that fails on weight fails, full stop — then check fiber, staple length and finish on top. Velvet is the clearest case where a high number is table stakes rather than a virtue.

Red flags

  • No GSM stated on a linen or flannel listing. Those fabrics live and die by weight, and sellers know it.
  • Thread count shouted, GSM absent. The gameable number is present and the ungameable one is not.
  • GSM quoted for a comforter without saying whether it is shell or fill. Two entirely different figures.
  • Linen under 140 GSM described as heavyweight. That is apparel-weight fabric on a bed.
  • A cover that weighs less than 1 kg in queen. Under about 95 GSM, regardless of what the page claims.
