Bamboo vs. cotton bedding

One of these fibers grew as a fluffy boll and was spun. The other grew as a woody stalk, was dissolved into a slurry, and was extruded as a filament. That difference explains everything that follows.

The definitions

Cotton is a natural staple fiber, spun directly from the seed hair. Quality tracks staple length — upland cotton runs about 1 inch, Pima and Egyptian long-staple 1.25–1.5 inches. Bamboo bedding is nearly always viscose rayon made from bamboo: the stalk is pulped, dissolved in a caustic bath, and spun into a smooth continuous filament. The FTC requires it to be labeled as rayon or viscose from bamboo rather than plain "bamboo." Because the fiber is manufactured rather than harvested, it has no staple ends and no natural twist, which is exactly why it feels slick.

A third option, mechanically retted bamboo linen, exists but is stiff, scarce, and expensive. If a cover feels silky, it is viscose.

Moisture and temperature

Bamboo viscose is the better wicking fiber. Its smooth cross-section and high absorbency pull liquid sweat off the skin and spread it across a wide surface, where it evaporates. If you wake up damp, that is the property you want, and it is why bamboo dominates recommendations for night sweats.

Cotton is the better airflow fiber, at least in percale form. A 125 GSM cotton percale has an open one-over-one grid that lets warm air escape; a 160 GSM bamboo sateen is denser and relies on conduction and wicking instead. In dry heat, where there is little sweat to move, the percale usually wins. In humid heat, bamboo wins.

One honest caveat: bamboo's famous cool touch is partly a first-contact effect. The fiber conducts heat away from your skin quickly, so it feels cold for the first ten seconds. Durability, and where bamboo loses

This is the honest weak point. Viscose is a regenerated cellulose filament with a weak wet structure — it can lose roughly half its dry strength when saturated. Practical consequences: bamboo covers should be washed cold at 86 °F/30 °C on gentle, dried on low or hung, and kept away from chlorine bleach and high-alkaline detergents. Overload the machine and you get stretched, wavy seams.

The environmental claims, examined

The plant side of the claim holds up. Bamboo grows several feet a year without irrigation, replanting, or the pesticide load conventional cotton carries. The processing side is where marketing outruns fact: standard viscose production uses carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide, and unless the mill runs closed-loop recovery, the solvent is an emissions problem.

Two labels do real work here. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 confirms the finished fabric tests clean for harmful residues — useful, but it says nothing about the mill's emissions. GOTS applies to organic natural fibers and covers processing and social criteria, which is why organic cotton is easier to verify than bamboo. Verdict
