Microfiber vs. cotton bedding

Cotton wins this on the criteria most bedding writing cares about. Microfiber still outsells it, and the reasons are legitimate — they are just not the ones the listings advertise.
The definitions
Microfiber is fabric made from synthetic filaments finer than one denier — roughly one-hundredth the diameter of a human hair. In bedding it is almost always polyester, sometimes with a small nylon share. Because the filaments are extruded rather than spun from staple, the fabric can be made extremely thin and dense. It is measured in GSM, not thread count: 90–120 GSM is the usable range for a cover, and anything under 80 feels papery.
Cotton is natural cellulose staple fiber, spun into yarn and woven. It absorbs roughly 8% of its weight in moisture, breathes through the gaps in its weave, and takes hot water. Ignore any microfiber listing quoting 1,800 or 2,000 thread count. Those numbers are invented; the filaments are too fine for a thread count to describe anything.

Temperature and moisture
This is the honest gap and it is not close. Polyester is hydrophobic: it absorbs well under 1% of its weight in water. Sweat that lands on it stays liquid on your skin or sits on the fabric surface. Cotton absorbs around 8% into the fiber itself, pulling moisture off the body, and a percale weave at 110–140 GSM lets warm air escape through the grid.
Dense microfiber does the opposite by design — packed fine filaments leave almost no air path. The result is a cover that feels warm and slightly clammy by 3 a.m. in a warm room. If you sleep hot, this is disqualifying, and the alternatives are in best duvet covers for hot sleepers.
The mirror image is that microfiber is genuinely good at holding heat. In a cold bedroom, on a tight budget, a microfiber cover over an all-season insert is a cheap and effective warmth layer.
Feel, static and pilling
Fresh microfiber feels soft in a specific brushed, slightly grabby way — it catches on dry skin and rough fingernails rather than sliding. Cotton percale feels crisp and cool; cotton sateen feels smooth and slick. Which you prefer is taste, but microfiber's softness is peel-and-reveal: it is at its best on day one and declines from there.
Pilling is the standard failure. Fine polyester filaments break under abrasion, ball up, and stay put, because polyester pills are anchored by strong fibers rather than falling off the way weak cotton pills do. A microfiber cover washed weekly usually shows visible pilling at the body-contact zone within 12–18 months. Static is the other nuisance — in dry winter air, polyester bedding crackles and clings, and fabric softener trades that for reduced breathability.
Care, cost and lifespan
Microfiber: wash warm at 104 °F/40 °C or cooler, tumble low, and skip high heat entirely — polyester softens near the temperatures a hot dryer reaches, and heat-damaged filaments pill faster. It dries in about half an hour and needs no ironing. Do not bleach it; chlorine yellows polyester permanently.

Costs and lives: a microfiber queen cover runs $30–$45 and realistically lasts about 2 years, so roughly $18 a year. A 300 TC long-staple cotton percale at $90 lasts 5–8 years, or about $15 a year. On cost per year they are close — the case for cotton is what those years feel like, not what they cost. The other cost is environmental: every polyester wash sheds microplastic fibers, which is a real drawback with no consumer-side fix beyond a filter bag.
Verdict
Cotton wins for hot sleepers, sensitive skin, long-term ownership, and anyone who wants a bed that feels better in year three than in week one. Buy 300 TC single-ply percale for cooling or 400–500 TC sateen for warmth. Start at best cotton duvet covers.

Does microfiber bedding sleep hot?
Yes, for most people. Polyester absorbs less than one percent of its weight in moisture, so sweat has nowhere to go and stays on your skin, and the tightly packed fine filaments block airflow. Cotton absorbs about eight percent and moves air through the weave.
Why does microfiber have a thread count if it is not woven like cotton?
Microfiber is measured in GSM, not thread count, because the filaments are far finer than cotton yarn and counting them is meaningless. A listing showing 1800 or 2000 thread count microfiber is quoting a number that does not describe anything. Look for 90 to 120 GSM instead.
Is microfiber bad for sensitive skin?
Not inherently, but two things matter. The finished fabric may carry processing chemicals unless it is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, and polyester holds sweat against the skin, which can aggravate eczema or heat rash. People with reactive skin usually do better with cotton or a cellulose fiber.
When is microfiber genuinely the better choice?
