Down vs. down alternative

The choice is usually framed as natural versus hypoallergenic. It is closer to a trade between warmth-per-ounce and replacement cycle — and the allergy part of the story is mostly wrong.

The definitions

Down is the fine, three-dimensional plumage under a goose or duck's outer feathers. Each cluster traps air in a branching structure, which is why it insulates so efficiently. Quality is measured as fill power: cubic inches one ounce of down lofts to. 550 is good, 600–700 very good, 700–800 excellent, 800+ specialty. Look for the RDS mark — the Responsible Down Standard covers bird welfare, not warmth.

Down alternative is polyester fill, usually siliconized hollow-fiber staple or gel-fiber clusters engineered to imitate down's loft. It has no fill power rating, because polyester does not loft that way. Warmth is set purely by fill weight and construction.

Warmth-to-weight

Down's advantage is efficiency, not maximum warmth. Air trapped in branching clusters insulates better per gram than air trapped between straight polyester filaments, so down delivers a given warmth level with less mass sitting on your chest. Practical queen-basis targets: summer 20–30 oz, all-season 35–45 oz, winter 50 oz and up.

Polyester reaches the same warmth by adding fill. That extra 20 oz is noticeable — some people read it as cozy weight, others as smothering. Polyester also handles humidity poorly: it does not absorb moisture, so sweat condenses in the shell rather than passing through. The allergy question, honestly

The standard marketing claim is that down causes allergies and polyester does not. That is mostly wrong. What triggers reactions in an old comforter is almost always dust mites and accumulated skin dander — both of which colonize any fill, polyester included, in bedding that has gone years without washing. A comforter is the single most neglected item in most homes.

Modern down is washed and sterilized during processing, and a tightly woven shell at 300 TC or above acts as a mite barrier. For most people with dust allergies, clean RDS-certified down in a good shell is fine, and washing it 2–3× a year matters far more than the fill type.

The genuine exception: a true feather or down protein allergy exists, and for people who have it the reaction is real and the fill type is the problem. Washing, lifespan and cost

Down: wash warm in a large front-loading machine with no agitator, use a small amount of mild detergent, run a second rinse to clear residue, then dry on low with wool dryer balls for 2–4 hours, breaking up clumps by hand every 30 minutes. Alternative: same machine constraints, but it dries in roughly an hour. The failure mode is different — polyester does not smell, it clumps. Once fibers mat, no amount of fluffing restores the loft, and the comforter is done.

Cost over a decade: one $250 down comforter at 700 FP, versus roughly three $70 alternatives replaced every 3–4 years. Call it $25 a year versus $21 a year — close enough that longevity should not be your deciding argument. The real differences are weight on the body, humidity handling, and how much cash leaves today.

FAQ

Am I allergic to down?

Probably not, though genuine feather allergy does exist and is real for a small number of people. In most cases the reaction traced to an old comforter is caused by dust mites and accumulated skin dander in bedding that has never been washed, not by the down itself.
