Momme (written mm, and unrelated to millimeters) is silk's weight unit: the weight in pounds of a piece of fabric 100 yards long and 45 inches wide. Higher momme means more silk per square inch, which means more opacity, more durability and a longer life. The practical ladder for bedding is 16 momme as the minimum, 19–22 momme as the sweet spot where cost and longevity meet, and 25 momme and up as heavy luxury. A 22 momme queen cover is not twice as good as a 16 — it is roughly a third heavier and considerably more durable at the seams, which is where silk covers fail.

16 momme is the floor for bedding, 19 to 22 momme is the sweet spot, and 25 momme and above is heavy luxury weight that costs accordingly. Below 16 the fabric is too sheer to sit over a white insert and it tears at the seams within a year or two.
Do I have to dry clean a silk duvet cover?
No, and dry cleaning solvents are harder on silk than careful hand washing. Use cold water at 86F/30C, a pH neutral detergent made for protein fibers, no wringing, and dry flat away from sunlight. Machine washing on a delicate cycle inside a mesh bag works for 19 momme and heavier if your machine has a genuine gentle setting.
Is satin bedding actually better for hair and skin?
The benefit comes from the low friction surface of the satin weave, not from silk specifically, so a polyester satin delivers most of it for a fraction of the price. What silk adds is moisture regulation: polyester holds sweat against the skin, which matters more than friction if you sleep warm.
