The best bedspreads

A bedspread is the one bed cover defined by its measurements rather than its fabric: it has to clear the floor on three sides and still have enough length left to fold over the pillows. We ranked these on drop depth first, then fabric weight, then how the edges are finished — because a spread that hangs six inches short of the carpet is just an expensive coverlet.
The drop measurement that decides everything
Take a tape measure from the top of your mattress straight down to the floor before you shop. On a queen mattress 60 inches wide, a 102-inch spread gives you (102 − 60) ÷ 2 = 21 inches per side. That reaches the floor on a 12- to 14-inch mattress sitting on a low platform frame. Put the same mattress on a box spring and a standard frame and the measurement jumps to roughly 28 to 32 inches, and a 102-inch spread leaves a visible gap.
Length works the same way. A 118-inch spread on an 80-inch queen mattress leaves 38 inches: about 20 inches of foot drop and 18 inches to fold back over standard pillows. If you sleep on king pillows or a euro sham stack, budget 24 inches of pillow tuck and buy the king length. More on sizing across the whole category in our queen bed cover sizing guide and the full size hub.
| Size | Mattress | Typical bedspread | Drop per side |
| Twin | 38×75″ | 81×110″ | 21.5″ |
| Full | 54×75″ | 96×110″ | 21″ |
| Queen | 60×80″ | 102×118″ | 21″ |
| King | 76×80″ | 120×118″ | 22″ |
The picks
Great Bay Home Chenille Bedspread
Best overall
★★★★★ Editor rating 4.6/5
The closest thing on Amazon to the tufted cotton chenille spread your grandmother owned, and the tufting is the point: it hides wrinkles, survives dogs, and gets softer with washing instead of pilling. Generous cut, so the three-sided drop actually lands where it should on a platform bed.
- FabricCotton-rich chenille
- StyleTufted, no fill
- CoverageFloor-length, 3-sided
- CareMachine wash warm
Pros
- Tufted surface hides creases with no ironing
- Genuinely long cut, not a stretched coverlet
- Softens over roughly 10 washes
Cons
- Sheds loose chenille fluff for the first two washes
- Too warm as a summer top layer in a hot bedroom
- Queen and king sizes are laundromat-only

Madison Park Quilted Bedspread Set
Best quilted look
★★★★☆ Editor rating 4.4/5
Quilted spreads with a thin polyester batting and matching shams, in the scalloped and channel-stitched patterns that read traditional without reading dated. The batting adds a little warmth and a lot of drape weight, which keeps the sides hanging straight instead of billowing.
- FabricPolyester face, poly batting
- StyleQuilted with shams
- CoverageOversized, near floor
- CareMachine wash cold
Pros
- Shams included and actually match the face fabric
- Batting weight keeps the drop hanging plumb
- Colors stay put through repeated washing
Cons
- Polyester face sleeps warm and is not breathable
- Drop is a couple of inches short of true floor-length on tall beds

Comfort Spaces Lightweight Bedspread Set
Best for warm rooms
★★★★☆ Editor rating 4.3/5
A thin, near-unfilled spread that gives you the floor-length silhouette without the thermal penalty. This is the one to buy for a guest room in a climate where the classic chenille spread would be unbearable from May onward.
- FabricMicrofiber face
- StyleStitched, minimal fill
- CoverageFloor-length
- Price band$
Pros
- Light enough to be a summer-only top layer
- Fits a standard home washer even in queen
Cons
- Microfiber traps humidity against the skin
- Thin face fabric shows the mattress edge line

EASELAND All-Season Quilted Bedspread
Best durability
★★★★☆ Editor rating 4.3/5
Dense diamond quilting on a heavier face fabric, which is why owners report it holding shape past the five-year mark where thinner spreads go limp. Treat it as a bedspread-weight comforter rather than a delicate decorative layer.
- FabricBrushed microfiber
- StyleDiamond quilted
- CoverageGenerous, near floor
- CareWash cold, tumble low

Utopia Bedding Bedspread Coverlet
Best budget
★★★☆☆ Editor rating 4.0/5
The honest entry price. It is cut shorter than the classic spreads here, so on anything taller than a platform bed it behaves like a long coverlet. Buy it for a spare room or a rental, not for the bed you want to look right for a decade.
- FabricPolyester microfiber
- StyleStitched box pattern
- CoverageBelow-mattress, not floor
- Price band$

How we chose
We start with published dimensions, convert them into a drop figure for each mattress size, and discount anything marketed as a bedspread that measures like a coverlet. After that we weigh fabric composition, edge finishing, and the pattern of long-term owner reports about shape retention and colorfastness. We do not accept free product and we do not rank by commission rate — the full method is on our about and methodology page.
Still deciding between formats? A bedspread is not a quilt and not a comforter: read duvet cover vs. bedspread and quilt vs. comforter before you buy. If you want a shorter, layered look instead, our coverlet picks and matelassé picks cover it, and the quilts and coverlets hub maps the whole category. For a stitched cotton top layer with shams, see the best quilt sets.
FAQ
What is the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet?
Length. A bedspread is cut to reach the floor on three sides and is long enough to fold over the pillows, usually 110 to 120 inches long. A coverlet stops a few inches below the mattress, around 15 to 18 inches of drop, and is meant to be layered over a bed skirt or a made bed.
Do bedspreads still work on a modern deep mattress?
Only if you measure first. A queen bedspread 102 inches wide gives 21 inches of drop per side. A 14-inch mattress on a low platform measures about 20 to 22 inches from the mattress top to the floor, so it works. A 14-inch mattress on a box spring and frame measures 28 to 32 inches, and the spread will hang short by six to ten inches.
Can you machine wash a bedspread at home?
A twin or full cotton bedspread fits most home washers. Queen and king spreads are 10 to 12 pounds when wet and need a 4.5 cubic foot or larger drum, or a laundromat machine. Wash warm at 104°F, tumble low, and expect two to three hours of drying time. Step by step in how to wash a quilt.
